An architect who drew in the far villages

Techi Gubin spent his career designing public buildings for Arunachal Pradesh. Outside the office, he worked to keep indigenous traditions alive and walked to the state's farthest border villages to hear what they needed.

Architect for the state

Techi Gubin’s profile is an unusual mix of architecture and social work. According to his official Padma citation, he was born on 1 November 1964 and completed a B.Arch. at Chandigarh College of Architecture in 1988.

He began his career as an assistant teacher, joined the Arunachal Pradesh Public Works Department in 1990, and went on to become Chief Architect and, with additional charge, Director of Housing. From 2000 to 2005 he was on deputation to HUDCO as a Development Officer.

Culture alongside career

Alongside his professional career, he held leadership roles in the Arunachal Vikas Parishad and other voluntary organisations. His citation mentions his work for Nyishi indigenous faith and culture, and activities to preserve Donyi-Polo traditions.

Listening at the border

Through the Seemant Darshan Yatras of 2010 and 2021, he visited remote villages along the borders with China, Myanmar and Bhutan, and was part of delegations that carried their security and infrastructure concerns to the national leadership.

His story is best read not as a political endorsement but as a meeting point of public service, indigenous identity and engagement with remote regions.
