The coach behind the archers

Purnima Mahato won six golds at a single National Games. Then she did something harder: she spent twenty-five years helping other archers win theirs.

An archer from Jamshedpur

Purnima Mahato’s archery journey began at about ten. According to her official Padma citation, she was born on 15 August 1976 in Jamshedpur. In 1987 she joined the Tata Archery Academy for formal training, and gradually rose to the national and international circuit.

Between 1993 and 1998 she represented India at the Asian Games, Commonwealth-level events and international World Cups. At the 1994 National Games in Pune she won six gold medals and was named the outstanding player.

From athlete to coach

Her greater legacy came through coaching. From 2000 she began training athletes and was part of India’s women’s archery system for many years. The official citation links her coaching to archers including Dola Banerjee, Deepika Kumari, Komalika Bari, Pranitha and Bhajan Kaur.

The hidden infrastructure of sport

The Dronacharya Award and the Padma Shri in 2024 recognise the move from winning medals herself to preparing the athletes who win them. In sports history, coaches are often less visible than athletes; her story brings that hidden infrastructure into view.

A coach’s success often shows up in someone else’s medal.
