Thirty years of one demand

In 1994 Manda Krishna Madiga started a movement around a single policy question. It took three decades of protests, petitions and organising before the Supreme Court ruled on it.

A movement for a fairer share

Manda Krishna Madiga’s profile is about social justice and public policy, so it needs to be written from the evidence rather than in partisan language. His official Padma citation records him as a social activist and public-affairs figure from Telangana.

From the 1980s he was active on caste discrimination and community rights. In 1994 he founded the MRPS, whose central demand was sub-categorisation, so that reservation benefits would be shared more equitably among the communities within the Scheduled Castes.

Beyond reservation

His activism was not limited to the reservation debate. The official citation also mentions a disability-rights organisation, and campaigns on pensions, health assistance and other issues for marginalised communities.

The 2024 judgment

In August 2024 the Supreme Court allowed states to sub-classify Scheduled Castes. The MRPS saw this as an important milestone in its long campaign, while debate continues over implementation and quota proportions. The Padma Shri in 2025 recognises his long work in public affairs.

Policy change rarely comes within a single election cycle. Keeping a demand alive for decades through democratic, legal and organisational channels is itself an example of persistence.
