A physician who asked research questions
Gagandeep Kang is one of India’s internationally recognised physician-scientists. After medical training she built a research programme, lasting decades, on enteric infections: rotavirus, diarrhoeal disease, gut health and vaccines.
Her core contributions are in rotavirus epidemiology, the burden of enteric disease, vaccine evaluation and population-based longitudinal studies.
Field and laboratory together
At Christian Medical College Vellore she joined field cohorts with laboratory science, to understand infections, immune responses and vaccine performance in children.
Setting up resource-heavy, long-term cohort studies in Indian settings was both a scientific and a logistical challenge. Strong evidence in public health is built from years of patient follow-up, community trust and multidisciplinary teamwork.
Building research capacity
She has been Executive Director of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) and is connected with global vaccine and public-health advisory roles. She is among the pioneering India-based women scientists elected Fellows of the Royal Society.
Her influence on child-health policy, vaccine development and evaluation, and infectious-disease research capacity has been significant, and she has strengthened high-quality clinical and field research in India.
