An oceanographer

Aditi Pant is counted among the pioneering women scientists of Indian oceanography and polar science. After advanced training in oceanography she joined the National Institute of Oceanography.

Her work was in marine science, ocean observations and polar research.

1983: the ice

In 1983, during an Indian Antarctic expedition, she and Sudipta Sengupta were among the first Indian women to reach Antarctica.

Antarctic expeditions then were physically demanding, logistically complex and strongly male-dominated. Taking part was not merely symbolic: in field science, endurance, logistics and teamwork are critical.

A door held open

She became part of the early history of India’s Antarctic research programme, and made polar field science a visible possibility for Indian women scientists. In later years she stayed connected with oceanographic research and science roles.

When barriers to representation fall, science’s talent pool grows. Field science can be just as rigorous as laboratory research.
