The coach behind India's para-athletes

Satyapal Singh was a good athlete. He became something rarer: the coach who, for about fifteen years, helped India's para-athletes onto the podiums of the Paralympics, the World Championships and the Asian Para Games.

Athlete first

Dr. Satyapal Singh’s story runs from athlete to coach, and from coach to builder of a para-sports system. According to his official Padma citation, he was born on 1 January 1978 in Machhri village, Ghaziabad.

He was a national-level athlete himself and won 19 medals at university level. Later, through sports coaching, yoga and higher study, he made training science his career.

Fifteen years at the helm

He began coaching in 2004, and in 2007 he took on the challenge of working with para-athletes. His citation describes him as Chief Coach of the Indian Para-Athletics Team for about 15 years.

Under his guidance, Indian para-athletes won 4 Paralympic medals, 6 World Championship medals and 18 Asian Para Games medals. These figures are a verified snapshot as of the citation.

More than medals

His coaching did not stop with elite athletes. The citation says he personally supported athletes from poor families with training, nutrition and equipment. His trainees include Paralympic medallists and seven Arjuna Awardees.

The Dronacharya Award in 2012 gave his coaching national recognition, and the 2025 Padma Shri placed his work in building inclusive sport in wider public memory.
