Physics and music

Raja Ramanna was born on 28 January 1925 in Tumkur, Karnataka. From a young age he was deeply interested in both physics and music.

After higher studies in nuclear physics in London he joined the Tata Institute and Atomic Energy Establishment ecosystem. His scholarly interest in classical music stayed with him all his life and made him an unusually broad intellectual.

Reactors and responsibility

At BARC he worked on reactor physics, nuclear instrumentation and programme management. After Homi Bhabha’s death, keeping the leadership steady and running a complex national programme was a big institutional challenge, and he played important leadership roles in it.

His name appears prominently in the scientific leadership linked to the 1974 Pokhran nuclear test. He was Director of BARC, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and later held leadership roles in DRDO.

Building capacity

He helped consolidate India’s nuclear-science infrastructure, trained manpower and strategic capability.

His career shows that high-stakes science needs administrative discipline and institutional memory as well as technical depth.
