What the official record says
The Ministry of Culture’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav “Unsung Heroes” index lists Karu Bhagat as a freedom fighter associated with Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. That listing is the strongest official evidence we have, and it is the reason he is in this archive.
What other accounts say
One secondary biography says he was born around 1917 in Ranipur village, Jhansi, to Puneet Bhagat in a farming family. The same source describes disruption of railway and telegraph lines during the 1942 movement, arrest, hardship in jail, and later recognition and a pension as a freedom fighter. This is an interesting account, but it has not yet been confirmed by a strong archival record.
1857 or 1942?
Recent Uttar Pradesh exam material places “Karu Bhagat, freedom fighter from Ranipur” in a question about the 1857 revolt, while the secondary biography gives a birth around 1917 and a role in 1942. Both cannot be true of the same person. Until records settle it, we are not stating either date as fact.
Why this profile still matters
This is exactly the kind of case this archive was built for. An official index has the name, but popular accounts on the internet disagree. Honouring an unsung hero does not mean filling in a story that looks complete. It means showing honestly where the evidence stops, and pointing to where the rest may be found: district archives, freedom-fighter pension records, family papers and state registers.
