One life saved in a tragedy

On 21 April 2024 there was a drowning accident in the Rilang River at Wahsiej. According to local and national reports, three girls were in trouble in the water, and two of them could not be saved. The third was pulled out by 13-year-old Elambok Dkhar, who went into the river after her.

Rescue in spite of fear

Reports by India Today NE and PTI say Elambok was himself afraid of the river. Even so, when he saw what was happening, he acted. That is what courage really is: not the absence of fear, but doing the right thing while afraid.

From a local citation to a national medal

On 1 May 2024, Meghalaya’s Chief Minister Conrad Sangma honoured Elambok with a citation and promised support for his education and basic needs. The state later recognised his bravery on Republic Day, alongside Kisen Wanniang. In January 2025, “Master Elambok Dkhar, Meghalaya” was named in the Government of India’s Jeevan Raksha Padak 2024 list.

What heroism means here

This story matters because it did not end happily for everyone: two young lives were lost. In a moment like that, heroism is not a victory story. It is the courage to save one life in the middle of a tragedy, when the risk was real and nothing was guaranteed. A quick response in an emergency can change a life.
